Donald Trump's Regime of Retribution and Reward

Donald Trump's voracious desire for retribution has quickly evolved into a structured system. During the year since his election, the president's rage and impulses have assumed the form of official policies in a manner comparable to past authoritarian regimes. Justice department figures who resist his demands are promptly fired and replaced by devotees. Critical figures who challenge him encounter prosecution, judicial process and penalties. Opponents have been designated under executive memoranda as “unpatriotic”, “opposed to religious values” and “against free markets”, and warned with criminal charges as “extremists”.

Government Institutions Remade

All case involving legal action of Trump's enemies and immunity for his allies displays its own particular qualities. Yet, notwithstanding their specific character, they embody manifestations of what has arisen as a deliberate method. Such episodes are not random. The administration's cleansing of Department of Justice prosecutors and law enforcement agents, alongside his installation of devotees in key roles, commenced rapidly, promptly developed a pattern, and has now been shaped into a regime. The justice department and the law enforcement agency have been remade into partisan organizations under Trump's clear direction to execute his wishes. Unfairness has been made routine. It constitutes the apparatus of revenge.

Administration is more concerned with targeting the leader's alleged adversaries than they are with protecting our public welfare.

Inside the Apparatus

The beginnings of this mechanism has been revealed in the court filing of multiple former top Federal Bureau officials lodged in late summer in the US district court in Washington against agency head a senior appointee and justice department head a key figure for unlawful firing in “a initiative of retribution against them for what the accused considered to be a failure to demonstrate proper devotion”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the ex- temporary head, details a conversation in which the director “freely confessed the unlawfulness of his behavior”.

Driscoll had sought to shield law enforcement officers from being fired, the lawsuit claims. He informed him that “they” – perceived by him to be the White House and DoJ – had directed him to dismiss all those who they identified as having been involved in a legal probe against the president. The document adds: “He stated that he had to fire the individuals his leaders told him to remove, because his capacity to keep his own job relied on the ouster of the agents who worked on matters involving the chief executive. He noted that there was no way he or him could do to prevent these or any other firings, because ‘the FBI sought to incarcerate the leader in prison and he remembers.’” After Driscoll told the director he was breaking the agency's own regulations, he allegedly said “he understood that and he was aware the nature of the swift terminations were likely improper”.

Extensive Impact

After his claimed admission to the official, the Department of Justice and the FBI have been gutted and reorganized for Trump's retribution system. Six of the agency's top officials were dismissed or compelled to leave in the first days of the government. Approximately thousands of professional attorneys at the department have accepted a “voluntary departure plan”. A minimum of seven federal prosecutors, such as those in the Manhattan division, resigned in protest over what they regarded as political interference in dropping the criminal prosecution against the local official, a political figure, in return for his cooperation with Trump's federal agency arrests of foreign nationals. The anti-corruption unit of DoJ, which oversees misconduct investigations, has been diminished to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been decimated: the majority of its employees has departed. One-third of executives at DoJ have quit. The section enforcing ecological regulations has seen departures of half its management.

Rewards and Sanctions

In the legal matter, the acting US attorney for the federal division, the official, quit in objection against what she described as the “trade-off”. Tom Homan, his “enforcement chief,” was present as the agent with Adams on television to announce: “Unless he complies, I'll reappear in NYC.”. Meanwhile, Emil Bove, previously the senior DoJ official and a ex-lawyer, who arranged the agreement, was granted an judicial position, a potential springboard to the highest court.

Trump's exemption for crimes carried out while in office, awarded by the unprecedented decision of the Republican majority on the supreme court, thus thwarting his legal action over the Capitol riot and maintaining his public standing for the presidential race, is the cornerstone on which he depends to defend his supporters. Given this protection, he has been empowered to authorize wrongdoing. The consequence of the court judgment infuses his administration and the political party down to its bones. The court matter has spread. As Richard Nixon's administration lawyer John Dean said about the Watergate
