Bolsonaro taken into custody after being deemed a flight risk

The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and handed more than 27 years in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after fresh information came to light.

This included attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could facilitate a chance to flee".

Court Filing Details Escape Risks

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the surveillance device to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.

His offspring, Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday night.

His son wrote on online platforms on Friday: Will you battle for your homeland, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your settee? I urge you to struggle with us."

He said the gathering would be so supporters could seek divine intervention for his health and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of his "relocation to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to request asylum through a consular facility", a announcement said.

The court filing underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is located around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

Global Responses

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Donald Trump, leading him to implement a fifty percent tax on goods coming from Brazil.

Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brazil's capital city and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Latest Court Petitions

It was only on last Friday that the his legal team asked the High Court to permit him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other health problems.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was determined responsible of orchestrating a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to murder the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the support of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without problem on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, many his followers attacked and damaged government buildings in the capital, the capital city.

The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also barred from running for public office until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The ex-leader called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the next presidential race.
